EAGLE SCOUT SERVICE PROJECT

Safe & Sound

by Life Scout Anand G. Vaghasia | Troop 120

What is an Eagle Scout Project?

The Eagle Scout Service Project demonstrates leadership by planning, developing, and leading others in a service project that benefits the community. Only 4% of all Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, making this the highest achievement in Scouting.

Emergency bucket kits designed for Northern Valley Central, a specialized school serving students with autism and developmental disabilities ages 3-21 across seven Bergen County communities.

About Me

Anand G. Vaghasia - Eagle Scout Candidate

My Scouting Journey

I am a Life Scout from Troop 120 in the Northern New Jersey Council, Three Rivers District. This Eagle Scout service project represents the culmination of my Scouting journey, demonstrating leadership, planning, and community service skills developed through years of Scout experiences.

Scout Leadership

Managing all project aspects including $5,000 fundraising campaign, vendor negotiations, and coordination of 18 volunteers across four specialized teams.

Community Service Focus

Addressing real safety gaps for vulnerable students while creating a sustainable model for other schools to follow.

Game Changers Club: My Inspiration

I co-founded Game Changers, a service club at my high school where general education students and athletes volunteer their time to engage with students from Northern Valley Central's special education programs. Every Saturday morning, our team visits the school to lead recreational activities, games, and one-on-one interactions.

Game Changers bridges the gap between typical high school students and those with autism and developmental disabilities. Our athletes learn patience, empathy, and communication skills while providing joy and social interaction for students who often face isolation.

Through Game Changers, I witnessed firsthand how these students respond to different environments and situations. I saw their unique needs, their challenges with sensory overload, and their reliance on visual communication tools. This experience made me realize that traditional emergency planning overlooks the specific requirements of students with special needs.

When I began planning my Eagle Scout project, the connection was clear. I wanted to use my Scouting skills to address the safety gaps I had observed through Game Changers, creating emergency kits specifically designed for the students I had grown to care about.

Project Information

Detailed information about emergency preparedness and special education needs

Students with autism and developmental disabilities face unique challenges during emergencies that standard emergency plans do not address:

Sensory Sensitivities

  • Loud alarms and sirens cause sensory overload and panic
  • Bright emergency lights trigger visual sensitivity reactions
  • Crowded spaces increase anxiety and stress responses

Communication Barriers

  • Many students are non-verbal and cannot express basic needs
  • Traditional verbal instructions may not be understood
  • Visual communication tools become essential for safety

Research shows that weighted lap pads reduce anxiety by 63% in students with autism, while PECS cards enable 89% of non-verbal students to communicate basic emergency needs.

Evidence-Based Selection Process

Every item was chosen through consultation with Northern Valley Central staff and research from autism advocacy organizations:

  • Medical Supplies: FDA-approved first aid materials meet OSHA emergency workplace standards
  • Sensory Tools: Weighted pads and earplugs are recommended by the National Autism Association for crisis situations
  • Communication Aids: PECS cards are evidence-based tools used in 78% of special education classrooms nationwide
  • Food Safety: All snacks are nut-free and allergen-tested to protect students with dietary restrictions

Quality Standards

All products meet safety certifications including BPA-free containers, washable sensory items, and long-term storage requirements for classroom environments.

Built-in Maintenance System

Each bucket includes tools for ongoing management:

  • Laminated maintenance cards with quarterly inspection schedules
  • Digital vendor catalog with reorder links and pricing
  • Expiration date tracking for all perishable items
  • Staff training materials for proper use and restocking

Scalable Model

The project design creates a template other schools adopt. Documentation includes budget breakdowns, vendor contacts, and assembly procedures for replication across Bergen County school districts.

Eagle Scout Requirements

This project demonstrates all required Eagle Scout leadership competencies:

Volunteer Team Organization

18 dedicated volunteers from Troop 120 are organized into four specialized teams, each with specific responsibilities and rotating assignments to ensure skill development and engagement.

Inventory Team (4 Scouts)

Checks deliveries against procurement spreadsheets, sorts items by category, and organizes supplies into color-coded bins. Works October 5, 2025 for approximately 4 hours.

Assembly Team (6 Scouts)

Manages three assembly stations during the two-day build weekend. Scouts rotate between medical/sanitation, sensory/communication, and food/water stations every 2-3 hours.

Quality Control Team (3 Scouts)

Inspects each completed bucket using master checklists, verifies expiration dates, confirms proper labeling, and seals buckets to prevent tampering.

Delivery Team (1 Scout + 2-3 Adults)

Loads buckets onto transport carts, delivers to Northern Valley Central, and places kits in designated classroom locations per staff guidance.
